Doug Williams met with his second staff at alma mater Grambling, completed this week with the addition of a new offensive line coach. He’s reunited with John Montgomery, who was offensive coordinator with Williams at his first coaching stop, Morehouse College.
Montgomery has also had tenures at Alabama A&M, at Wichita and Howard with the legendary Willie Jeffries, at Nevada, and most recently at Savannah State, where he was assistant head coach as well. Montgomery served as linebackers coach at A&M, beginning in 1978, then returned in the early 1990s as offensive coordinator. He coached running backs with Jeffries at Wichita and then was promoted to offensive coordinator when Jeffries moved on to Howard.
Perhaps most interestingly, while at Nevada in 1987, he returned to running backs, overseeing the FBS’ leading rusher in Elbert “Ickey” Woods — later the 31st selection in the 1988 draft by the Cincinnati Bengals, and a dance sensation.
He moved on to Langston as offensive coordinator in the early 1990s, and returned to the school in 2001 as athletics director. Montgomery also made a stop in Cincinnati with Rick Minter before joining Williams the first time. He was offensive line and running backs coach at Benedict College, from 2004-2007, before arriving at Savannah.
Montgomery played college football in the SWAC at the same time as Williams, appearing on the 1973-75 Prairie View A&M defensive lines.
